Forgot your email password? Learn how to recover or reset it for Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, and other major email providers.
Can You 'Check' an Email Password?
For security reasons, **email providers never show you your stored password** — not in settings, not in the app, and not on any page. Once a password is set, you can't retrieve the original plain text.
What you CAN do: - **See saved passwords** in your browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox store them) - **Find saved passwords** in your device's password manager (iPhone Keychain, Google Password Manager) - **Reset your password** if you've forgotten it
If you saved your password in a browser or password manager, that's your fastest route to recovering it.
Finding a Saved Email Password in Your Browser
**Google Chrome:** 1. Open Chrome and go to chrome://password-manager/passwords 2. Search for your email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook) 3. Click the eye icon next to the entry and authenticate 4. Your saved password appears
**Safari (Mac/iPhone):** 1. Go to Settings (iPhone) or System Settings → Passwords (Mac) 2. Search for your email provider 3. Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode 4. Tap the entry to see the saved password
**Firefox:** 1. Open Firefox → Settings → Privacy & Security → Saved Logins 2. Find your email provider and click the eye icon
Resetting Your Gmail Password
1. Go to **accounts.google.com** and sign in 2. Select **Security → How you sign in to Google → Password** 3. Enter your current password to confirm, then set a new one
If you forgot your Gmail password: 1. Go to gmail.com and click **Forgot password?** 2. Google offers recovery via backup email, phone text, or security questions 3. Follow the on-screen steps to create a new password
If you've lost access to all recovery options, Google's account recovery form at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery allows you to prove ownership through other means.
Resetting Your Outlook / Hotmail Password
1. Visit **account.microsoft.com** and sign in 2. Go to **Security → Change password** 3. Enter your old password, then your new one
Forgot your Outlook password? 1. Go to login.microsoftonline.com and click **Forgot my password** 2. Choose recovery via email, phone, or security questions 3. Microsoft sends a reset code to your recovery contact 4. Create a new password
For Microsoft 365 work accounts, contact your IT administrator — they control password resets for business accounts.
Resetting Your Yahoo Mail Password
1. Visit **security.yahoo.com** and sign in 2. Click **Change password** and enter a new one
Forgot your Yahoo password? 1. Go to login.yahoo.com and click **Forgot password** 2. Yahoo sends a verification code to your recovery phone or email 3. Enter the code and create a new password
If you've lost access to all recovery methods, Yahoo's account recovery page offers additional identity verification options. The process may take 1-2 days for manual verification.
Password Security Best Practices
- **Use a password manager**: Tools like 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass generate and store strong, unique passwords for every account - **Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)**: Adds a second layer of security so a stolen password alone isn't enough to access your account - **Use a strong password**: 12+ characters, mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols - **Never reuse passwords**: If one service is breached, unique passwords protect your other accounts - **Change passwords regularly**: Update your email password every 6-12 months, or immediately after any suspected breach
Use a password manager and you'll never need to 'check' a password again — they remember everything for you.
